Today, tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in the world, second only to water. Hundreds of millions of people drink tea in the world, and studies suggest that green tea (Camellia Sinesis) in particular has many health benefits. Green tea originated from China and has associated with many cultures in Asia, Japan to the Middle East. It has recently been more widespread in the West, where traditionally black tea is consumed.
There are three varieties of tea – green, black, and oolong. The difference between the teas is in their processing. Green tea is made exclusively from leaves of “Camellia sinensis”, which have undergone minimal oxidation during processing done.
Green tea contains salubrious polyphenols, especially the catechin, epigallocatechin gallate is the most common. Green tea also contains carotenoids, tocopherols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), minerals such as chromium, manganese, selenium and zinc, and certain phytochemicals. - Weight loss – Clinical studies suggest that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat. A study confirms that the combination of caffeine & green tea improved the weight loss of moderately obese individuals.
- Diabetes - Green tea has been traditionally used to control blood sugar levels in the body.
- Liver disease – population-based clinical studies have shown that men who drinks more than 10 cups of green tea per day have lesser chances of developing liver diseases. Green tea appears to protect the liver against the harmful effects of toxic substances such as alcohol
- Atherosclerosis – Population based clinical studies suggest that the antioxidant properties of green tea helps prevent arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease in particular. Researchers estimate that the rate of heart attacks decreases by 11% by taking three cups of tea per day.
- High Cholesterol – Green tea lowers total cholesterol and increases HDL (“good cholesterol”) in animals and humans. One population-based clinical study has shown that men who drinks green tea has lower cholesterol levels than those who do not drink green tea.
- Cancer - Several population based clinical studies have shown that green tea and black tea helps protect against cancer. Emerging clinical studies suggest that the polyphenols in green tea, help kill cancerous cells and stop their progression
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – Green tea may help to reduce inflammation linked with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both types of IBD.
